50 years of photography by Richard & Pablo Bartholomew
Family, Home and the Street

Pablo Bartholomew, Photographer

A dedicated art critic, Richard Bartholomew had a keen eye for photography. From the 1950s, he photographed his social milieu, including his artist friends like M.F. Husain, Ram Kumar, F.N. Souza, and V.S. Gaitonde, who went on to define the Modernist moment in Indian Art, alongside intimate, domestic shots of his family, and life on the streets. In the '70s, his high school drop-out son, Pablo Bartholomew took to the camera as well, and began looking at the end of the hippie era, his friends, their drug-infused parties and casual hangouts, while Pablo persistently engaging with the fringe and marginal worlds in India's grand metropolitan cities, before participating in the larger world of photojournalism, documenting South Asia and its turmoils from 1983 to 2000. This presentation brings together work by father and the son, collectively spanning 50 years of photography and offering a rare portrait of post-Independent India.
